My background is in clinical research involving people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. I have worked a great deal in the area of end-organ complications of diabetes, as it relates to the kidney, eyes, nerves, and the cardiovascular system. For patients who have developed diabetes, the avoidance of complications remains a prominent target and one I plan to continue to pursuit. One way of avoiding complications is to maintain good glucose control. In addition, other treatments that may be organ-specific and not directly targeted at glucose control, may prevent or slow the progression of end-organ complications.
I have also had a background in two specific areas of diabetes. They include the treatment of young adults with diabetes and new-onset diabetes after transplantation. I have developed a young adult diabetes clinic that addresses the care of young adults with diabetes. This age group is associated with special challenges and is also associated with blood sugar control that is less than what we promote for our adults with diabetes. How we treat young adults goes beyond blood sugar control and addresses personal concerns, methods of learning and the development of autonomous self-care, and how young adults make the transition to a healthy adult. Our goal is to develop such a clinic at the Harold Hamm Oklahoma Diabetes Center with colleagues from Pediatric Endocrinology. The other area of specialty is in the care of transplant patients who develop diabetes after solid organ transplantation. This is a major problem in patients who have transplants for kidney, liver, and heart.
I look forward to working with my colleagues at the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center in developing a world-recognized clinical diabetes center where patients can come for excellent care. This includes working with professionals from a variety of disciplines, such as physicians, mental health professionals, nurses, dieticians, and administrative professionals.
With diabetes affecting up to 10% of people in Oklahoma, I look forward to working with our staff and those in our community about ways to potentially prevent diabetes. For those who don’t know if they have diabetes, it is important to have access to care and appropriate screening so that they might receive appropriate medical care.
