Summary - (OSHA) Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories Standard

A risk assessment should be performed of both the infectious and non-infectious chemical and/or biological hazard to personnel and the environment associated with a biological toxin. Under the OSHA regulation, standard operating procedures (SOPs) should be developed to address the non-infectious hazard, including personal protective equipment needed, exposure procedures, antitoxin availability, proper storage and waste disposal. CDC has published Guidelines for Work With Toxins of Biological Origin  which may help a researcher develop SOPs to address both the infectious and non-infectious hazards.
