Submit your work to Blood and Thunder!

**UPDATES**

Update#1: In the summer of 2017, Blood and Thunder switched to an online submission process via the OUHSC Qualtrics account!

Update#2: We also decided to place reciept of submissions on hold until December 1, 2017. (Any works already received are still eligible for publication) We made this change to shorten the length of time authors & artists have to hear of acceptance or rejection

 

All interested authors and artists are invited to submit original, health care-related, unpublished literary or artistic works.

To have your work considered for Blood and Thunder, you must follow the below guidelines & rules.

GUIDELINES

  1. Submission documents should NOT contain any personal information.
  2. Please create one Microsoft Word document for each submission. (3 POEMS = 3 WORD DOCs)
  3. Prose/Poetry submissions should follow below text formatting.

TEXT REQUIREMENTS

  1. Single spaced
  2. Times New Roman
  3. Size 12 font
  4. 3,500 word Maximum
  5. Name each file with the title of the piece. (SAMPLE: "My-Life-with-Anxiety")

Rules SHORT LIST

Please read the below rules before proceeding to the submission process.  The full version of these rules is at the bottom of this page.

  1. All work submitted must be related to health care.
  2. One author/artist can submit up to five (5) works total (regardless of category).
  3. Blood and Thunder cannot accept works previously published or due to be published.
  4. After publication, author can reprint work(s) as long as appropriate acknowledgment to Blood and Thunder is made.
  5. The only direct compensation to the author/artist is one free copy of the edition of the journal in which their work appeared.
  6. Any identifiable photograph of an individual must be accompanied by a release showing consent to be photographed and published.

Timeline (*NOTE: This journal is created by OU medical student volunteers. Therefore, please be advised that this is not a strict timeline.)

Submissions Due. May 31st
Editorial Board votes on submissions. June
Voting is closed. Early July
Submissions that did not make the 60% acceptance rate cut off are notified. July - August
Editor In Chief, Copy Editors & Design Editors place all submissions with 60% ratings into the template. July - August
Template is reviewed & adjusted to the 200-250 page maximum & further cuts are made (if needed). July - August
EIC & Copy Editors begin their review and create draft #1. August - September
Design Editors review of the first draft & send edit suggestions to the EIC & Copy Editors to create draft #2. August - September
Coordinator & Advisors review the second draft and send edit suggestions to the EIC & Copy Editors. August - September
Draft #3 is sent to OU Printing Services for a PDF & hard copy proof. Early September
OU Printing Services for a PDF & hard copy are reviewd by the Editor In Chief, Copy Editors & Design Editors. September
Mark ups are turned in to OU Printing Services & a final proof is created and approved by the Coordinator. September - October
Journals are delivered to the Coordinator no later thatn the week of the annual Journal Release Reception. Late October
Journals are revealed at the reception and distributed to those in attendance. Late October
A complimentary journal is distributed to every author, artist and donor. November - December

Blood and Thunder Rules

  1. All work submitted must be related to health care. The decision on a work's relation to health care will rest with the Blood and Thunder editorial staff. All decisions are final.Click Here to Read About How We Vote
  2. One author/artist can submit up to five works total (regardless of category). If you send us more than five, we are not obligated to pick five from the lot. They may all be denied consideration.
  3. Blood and Thunder cannot accept works previously published or due to be published by any other publications, including paper publications, internet publications, and prior publication in Blood and Thunder.
  4. Blood and Thunder acquires first publication rights, as well as rights to republish the work for promotional purposes. After publication, re-printing rights revert to the author, and may be reprinted as long as appropriate acknowledgment to Blood and Thunder is made.
  5. The only direct compensation to the author or artist is in the form of one free copy of the edition of the journal in which their work appeared. Monetary compensation is not possible.
  6. We require a signed “Letter of Agreement” prior to publication of any work. The author or artist will receive the document as an attachment with their email notification of acceptance into the forthcoming journal.

Additional Visual Art Submission Requirements:

  1. Visual art can include: paintings, drawings, & photography (photography of your sculptures is acceptable). 
  2. Photography of three-dimensional artwork, such as sculptures, the artist(s) credited must be the creator of the artwork and the photographer.
  3. Any identifiable photograph of an individual must be accompanied by a release showing consent to be photographed and published.
  4. All works should be sent in a (.JPG) or (.JPEG) format, scanned at a resolution 300 dpi or greater and have a file size no greater than 30 MB. If the artist wishes to submit a higher resolution depiction of their work they may submit one after notification of acceptance.
