Program Overview:

Format:
  • 12-topic curriculum for families, consumers and mental health providers (Note: program is often provided for all three of these groups simultaneously, thereby allowing for fruitful interactions among these populations)

  • Sample session topics include: anxiety,depression, psychosis, mania, medications, relapse, wellness (etc)

  • 516-page textbook (which is the handout for participants as well as the trainer's guide) includes specific session outlines with detailed information ("fast facts") about the various diagnoses, definitions of technical terms, tips on coping, etc.

  • Includes emphasis on monitoring psychiatric symptoms using a "MAST" (monthly assessment of symptoms tool) focusing on the duration, intensity and frequency of symptoms


Frequency/ Duration:
  • 3-hour sessions are provided by a mental health professional on a weekly basis for 12 weeks
  • Authors recommend a 2-3 person facilitation team when possible

Research:
None published; informal pre-post test research with consumers, family members and service providers has revealed increased knowledge base about mental illness(www.medscape.com/viewarticle/418620)
