  • 12-topic curriculum for families addressing the etiology and treatment of mental illness; management skills (e.g., relapse prevention);rights & responsibilities; and general coping skills
  • Manual includes specific handouts and overheads for each topic

Research: None published; informal research on patient satisfaction and increase in knowledge (personal communication with Dr. Bisbee, 12-10-02)
  • Manual contains a 12-item "psychiatric patient education" & "family education" information test (no psychometric properties) to assess knowledge about mental illness (can be used as a pre and posttest measure.)
  • Manual also includes an "attitude checklist" (no psychometric properties) to assess attitudes toward mental illness

Notes: Manual also has 15 topics of patient education (focusing on illness self management, coping skills, and diagnostic groupings of depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia)
