Involving Families in Services for the Seriously Mentally Ill
Program Overview: Note: According to the Psychiatric Rehabilitation website, this module was written in collaboration with members of the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and was field tested in 6states across the United States. Theoretical Orientation: Behavioral Format: This module contains a trainer's manual, 10 consumer guidebooks, and a demonstration video. The trainer's manual includes detailed guidelines for professionals and structured exercises useful for engaging family members. The interventions focus on reducing the family's emotional burden via teaching skills in communication and problem solving. The video demonstrates effective coping skills for families and can bemused in psychoeducational programs. Workshops are provided for approximately 10 family members. Patients are not included in the family sessions. Core Competencies: The program is structured around seven competencies:
