Program Overview:

Theoretical Orientation:
This program draws from previous work by Holder & Anderson and Yalom. Thus, it is a combination of psychoeducational techniques with family therapy techniques.

Patient Population:
The program is for patients with either unipolar or bipolar depression. It has also been adapted for patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer.

Program Goals:
  1. Educate about the symptoms of depression & mania
  2. Promote relationships and increase understanding of the effects of the illness on the family
  3. Teach new coping strategies
  4. Improve the family's understanding of how patients & families can work together, as well as with mental health professionals

Format:
  1. 60-minute screening / assessment session including the patient & family member(s)

The chapter contains an outline of the 10 points to cover in screening session.

  2. 6 weekly 90-minute multiple-family group (MFG) sessions
    • Sessions include a balance between didactic presentation and group discussion (the first 3 sessions are more didactic, while latter 3 are more interactive)
    • Both the patients and families attend the sessions (all family members over age 12 are expected to attend)
    • Groups of 5-6 families (12-14 people) are optimal
    • The chapter contains specific outlines of each of the 6 group sessions

Research: An NIMH funded study comparing the effectiveness of medication management alone and its combination with family therapy or multifamily group therapy was recently completed. The data is being analyzed.
