Joining Evidence and Clinical Expertise for Best Practice
Presented By: Wendy J. Coster, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy at Boston University’s College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (Sargent College).
Is there a role for clinical expertise in an evidence-based approach to practice? Or does the mandate to base clinical decisions on “the best available evidence” preclude the use of knowledge gained from practice? This presentation will examine the strengths and limitations of both clinical judgment and research evidence as sources of information to guide practice. It will examine how and when consideration of knowledge gained from each source may contribute to a more balanced and ultimately sounder decision-making process in occupational therapy practice.
