Education

Education is the heart-beat of this Department. The Department has an impact at every level of undergraduate and graduate medical education. Entering medical students can take a week-long introduction to geriatrics.  First and second year students can take a ten week, part-time immersion in geriatrics and gerontology.  Second year students receive didactics on pathophysiology of aging, then they experience some of these changes first-hand through the Adapting to Health Change program.  Third year students complete a mandatory 4-week clinical clerkship in geriatric medicine.  Fourth year students learn about the care of frail elders from personal interaction with departmental faculty.  Clinical residents are provided practical exposure to appropriate care of frail elders via hospital care.  Geriatric medicine fellows develop the expertise necessary to become leaders in the field of aging.  An AGS-affiliated student chapter (IGIG) offers extracurricular opportunities for campus-wide interdisciplinary interaction, guest speakers, and community involvement.
