Introduction
Incontinence is defined as "the involuntary loss of urine (or stool) in
sufficient amounts or frequency to cause social or medical problems." Fecal
incontinence is rare and is usually caused by fecal impaction or neurological
disorders. This module focuses on urinary incontinence, which is a common problem in
America. The prevalence is higher for older adults, especially older women. In addition to major
physical and financial burdens urinary incontinence (UI) can lead to social
isolation and depression and is a frequent precipitating factor for nursing home
placement. UI can be treated effectively in almost all cases. However, it is
often , and many primary care providers are uncomfortable or unaware of appropriate diagnostic strategies and treatments.
This teaching module is an attempt to help health care providers deal more
effectively with incontinence. In addition to including information for health
care providers, we have also included printable information and instructions for
patients and caregivers.
