Management

Initial treatment depends on the type of incontinence. First, treat all possible precipitating factors, which in many cases may "cure" the incontinence. Next, initial treatment usually involves a combination of behavioral and medical treatments for stress and urge incontinence. For functional incontinence, treating contributing factors and behavioral treatments often help. Overflow incontinence should be treated first with decompression and, if possible, treatment of the primary cause.
