Management of Overflow Incontinence
Overflow UI should not usually be treated with medications or behavioral therapies, at
least not until the bladder is safely decompressed. Once that is done, treating
reversible problems should be done
this may include withdrawing medications, such as those with anticholinergic side effects, and treating fecal impaction. Since this may take several
days, the catheterization should continue during this time, and, after the catheterization is
discontinued the PVR should be rechecked.
Surgery or other procedures:
- Prostate surgery
- Balloon dilatation of prostate
- Urethral stent placement
- Laser prostatectomy
- Decompression of the bladder
