Prematriculation Institute
The Prematriculation Institute was created to offer entering medical students an intensive experience of senior's health care.
Essential ways that this Institute will boost your knowledge of geriatric medicine include:
- Being aware of the myths and stereotypes associated with aging,
- Recognizing the diversity of the senior population,
- Realizing that chronological age does not determine functional level, medical illness, or health care needs,
- Learning the value of teamwork in providing quality health care for the mature patient,
- Aquiring knowledge of aging issues, demographics, and theories of aging,
- Knowing the common geriatric syndromes related to age, ie, declingin physical function, polypharmacy, dementia, depression,
- Being able to perform a basic geriatric interview, including a medical, family, and social history,
- Practicing diagnostic skills related to cognition, depression, gait, and balance,
- Performinf functional assessments.
