Guiding Feedback Principles
Some guiding principles to giving feedback include the following:
- Specific feedback is preferable to generalities.
- Immediate feedback is preferable to saving up or "stockpiling" feedback.
- People learn better when they can link feedback to an incident fresh in their
mind.
- Take personal ownership of the feedback you give.
- First-hand (direct) feedback is best because it is more credible,
- especially if the feedback is negative.
- Focus on the behavior or issue rather than the personality of the team member.
- Emphasize and reinforce positive behaviors.
