Steps in Receiving Feedback
Feedback is a two-way process. An effective team member must not only be good
at giving feedback, but must also be good at receiving it. The following
steps are helpful when receiving feedback:
- Listen with the intent to clearly understand the feedback. Allow the person
to finish before adding your interpretation. Look at the discussion as an
opportunity to gain information and insight.
- Ask clarifying questions or paraphrase. Seek to clarify the feedback you are
receiving. Ask questions to clear up any confusion. Restate key points in your
own words to make sure you understand.
- Share your own views on the situation. Once you fully understand the feedback
given, share how you feel.
- Jointly discuss and agree on possible ways to integrate the feedback.
- Express your appreciation. Remember, it is much easier for a person to just
keep quiet, avoid taking the risk, and not say anything at all.
