- What is the GREAT Symposium?
GREAT is an acronym for Graduate Research Education and Technology Symposium. For the past 36 years, students at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center have showcased their original research at GREAT. Students and postdoctoral fellows compete for travel grants to present their research at national scientific meetings. Participation in GREAT has increased substantially in recent years and in 2011 had 146 participants.

The 2012 symposium hosts two Pre-GREAT Workshops, oral and poster presentations, and vendor show. The symposium also hosts a career development workshop and a keynote address by Keith Burridge, Ph.D., Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. His research interests involves the interaction of cells with the surrounding extracellular matrix (ECM)affects many aspects of cell behavior, including the migration of cells, their growth and differientation. Dr. Burridge's lab has studied the interaction of cells with ECM, using the focal adhesion as a model system.
