Is a patient entitled to inspect or obtain a copy of his/her entire medical record? Unless an exception applies, a patient has the right to inspect and obtain a copy of protected health information included in a designated record set. A patient does not have the right to access psychotherapy notes except to the extent the patient's treating professional approves the access in writing or the patient obtains a court order authorizing access. Psychotherapy notes must be kept separated from the rest of a patient's medical record. Return to FAQ List
