Q: What is the purpose of the OU-NC IRB? A: The OU-NC IRB reviews research protocols in an effort to safeguard the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research and to assist researchers and the university in our mutual obligation to comply with all federal, state, and OU-NC regulations and policies with respect to protection human subjects in research. We have jurisdiction to review and approve human subjects research conducted at the University of Oklahoma-Norman Campus, University of Oklahoma-Tulsa Campus(non-medical), and Cameron University. All research which may result in publication or public presentation, involving human subjects or use of data on human subjects that will be performed at or by researchers, faculty, staff or students of the sites named must be reviewed prior to initiation.
Q: What is Research? A: Research means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.
Q: What is considered a "Human Subject"? A: A Human Subject is a living individual about whom an investigator conducting research obtains: 1) data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or 2) identifiable private information (non-identifiable private information used in research must be reviewed under the exempt process and therefore must also be submitted to the IRB.
Q: How can I determine if a project requires IRB review? A: The OU-NC IRB has developed a tool that should assist you in making this determination. You can access this tool below. If you still are unsure after completion of this form, you should complete an application. SOP 406 provides additional information regarding the determination of human research.
Q: What about Classroom Projects? A: A classroom project that is conducted for the purpose of learning research skills and with no intent to publish the findings does not require OU-NC IRB review.
