"Oklahoma City is one of the most affordable major metropolitan areas"
-- American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association
|
|
|
The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC)
is located in central Oklahoma City at the intersection of two major interstates allowing for easy accessibility from a variety of
directions in the metropolitan area. Oklahoma City is both the State Capitol and, with a population of over
500,000, the largest city in the state. Based on the 2000 U.S. Census, Oklahoma City ranked as the 29th largest
city in the Nation. Its land size of 608.2 square miles also makes Oklahoma City one of the largest in the
country, but unlike cities of similar sizes, Oklahoma City is virtually free of consistent traffic congestion and over-crowding.
The American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association’s (ACCRA) recent survey, reported in the Oklahoma City Chamber of
Commerce, listed Oklahoma City as one of the most affordable major
metropolitan areas in which to live (the cost of living index
measured the differences in costs of 59 consumer goods and services, excluding
taxes, across 329 other cities nationwide). Oklahoma City’s cost of living
index is 89.6 and housing index is 79.8 (the national averages are 100.0). Compare Oklahoma City's costs with these cities:
|
| |
| City | Cost of Living Index | Housing Index | $20,000 Annual Stipend Equivalency | $84,600 Average Oklahoma City home |
| Denver, CO | 111.9 | 129.2 | $24,978 | $170,100 |
| Chicago, IL | 119.4 | 140.6 | $27,820 | $170,200 |
| Washington, D.C./ Suburban MD & VA | 120.9 | 148.2 | $30,151 | $176,400 |
| Boston, MA | 142.2 | 192.4 | $31,741 | $255,100 |
| Los Angeles, CA | 142.3 | 205.3 | $32,332 | $231,000 |
| New York, NY | 189.1 | 279.8 | $47,153 | $314,800 |
| San Francisco, CA | 209.5 | 366.8 | $46,763 | $404,500 |
| Palo Alto, CA | 273.4 | 577.2 | $61,027 | $649,300 |

"Oklahoma City rates in the top 15% of best cities to live in."
-- Places Rated Almanac

The Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce reports that
the Ernst Young Kenneth Leventhal Real Estate Group's Study of Housing
Costs found Oklahoma City residents paid only 17.4% of disposable income for
upscale housing, ranking the city as one of the nation's most affordable upscale
housing markets.
And because of its geographic location, Oklahoma City enjoys the four seasons with particularly mild winters.
There is no shortage of “things to do” in Oklahoma
City. Recreational, cultural, and
historic attractions in the area include: Bricktown (revitalized
old warehouse district less than 2 miles from the OUHSC that includes sports,
restaurants, and nightlife), numerous theatrical
productions, Native
American Heritage festivals (Red
Earth Native American Festival), museums for adults and children alike (Omniplex), sports, the Oklahoma City Zoo, and
the National Cowboy Hall of Fame
and Western Heritage Museum, to name a few. Many more sites are listed below.
Considered the “Crossroads of America” where the
heart of the Mother Road, Route 66, once ran, Oklahoma City is in the center of
the country, conveniently located halfway to any destination in any
direction.
Air carriers that serve Oklahoma City's Will Rogers World Airport are:
Allegiant Air
American & American Eagle
American West
Champion Air
Continental
Delta

Kansas City, Las Vegas, Memphis, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Newark, Orlando-Sanford, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, and St. Louis.
This combination of affordable housing, low cost of living, short commutes, accessible travel, overall convenience, and a variety of
recreational, cultural, and historic attractions for residents and visitors alike are some of the reasons that Places Rated Almanac recognized Oklahoma City
as the 46th (out of 351) best city to live.
