INSULIN FOR LIFE, INC.
IFL objectives are:
-
To donate insulin, glucose test strips and other supplies in urgent situations
-
To mentor similar programs elsewhere
-
To help develop and implement sustainable improvements in insulin supply in countries in need
The program is based on the collecting no longer needed, unopened and in-date (with at least 5 months to use-by date) insulin and glucose test strips that would otherwise be wasted from diabetes centers and sending them overseas.
Insulin for Life has been greatly honored to receive two Awards recently:
- The American Diabetes Association - Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes, 2005
- The Sir Philip Sherlock Distinguished Award for Services to Diabetes Internationally, 2005 - the first time it has been awarded outside the Caribbean.
- The Lilly Partnership in Diabetes Global and Australia Awards, for Contribution to Care in the Community, 2005.
The work of IFL is due to the dedication of the Board, the IFL Affiliates in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, and the many volunteers and supporters around the world.
Collecting supplies that would otherwise be wasted
Since 1986, Insulin for Life has donated 1,250,000 mls of insulin, 1.4 million syringes, 245,000 blood test strips and quantities of insulin pens, needles, lancets, monitors and other items to 50 countries, having a value of $US 3,400,000. This volume can keep alive 42,000 people for 3 months. A few months supply may be all that is needed, giving a person time to again obtain ongoing supplies.
Countries in all International Diabetes Federation regions have been supplied in cooperation with Diabetes Associations, the IDF, diabetes clinics, physicians and educators, and non-government organizations and Service Clubs. Individuals and organisations in a number of countries pay for the operating costs, which are 5-10% of the value of the supplies.
IFL supplies from Australia, Germany and the UK reached Sri Lanka within 14 days of the December 2004 tsunami, and with financial support from the American Diabetes Association, Children with Diabetes Foundation (America) and the International Diabetes Aid Fund, Japan, monthly shipments, as requested by the Sri Lanka and Maldives Diabetes Associations will continue to be sent. More information on our response following the December 2004 tsunami is available on our website.
