Center on Child Abuse and Neglect

The Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (CCAN) was established in the Department of Pediatrics, College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1992.The faculty includes clinical child psychologists, counseling psychologists, and a licensed attorney who provide national leadership in the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect through exemplary research, interdisciplinary education and training of professionals, administrative services, clinical care, and program development. The Center is a university-based, interdisciplinary center dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.CCAN directs research, program administration, clinical services, professional education, program development, and public education in the field of child maltreatment at the state, national, and international levels.

In 2001, CCAN merged with the Child Study Center (CSC) to form the Section of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (SDBP) in order to expand professional education, increase research, and provide statewide leadership in services for the underserved populations of children with disabilities and those who had been maltreated or exposed to trauma.

CCAN provides an annual interdisciplinary conference for professionals in the field of child maltreatment. The following professionals would benefit from the training: law enforcement, social workers, DHS child welfare, medical personnel, multidisciplinary team members, mental health, attorneys, counselors, psychologists, alcohol and drug counselors, child advocates, judges, and educators.
