New Treatment for Advanced Ovarian Cancer Patients

Joan Walker, MD, Co-Leader of the Gynecologic Oncology Program, OU Cancer Institute, is a leader in a multi-site clinical trial that demonstrates the effectiveness of IP chemotherapy over traditional chemotherapy [more]. Women with advanced ovarian cancer who received the experimental regimen lived an average of 16 months longer. Results of this study, co-authored by Dr. Walker, were published in the New England Journal of Medicine and highlighted in the New York Times in January, 2006.

Chemoprevention Researcher Receives Largest NCI Grant Ever Awarded in Oklahoma

In August 2005, Chinthalapally V. Rao, PhD, head of the Chemoprevention program, was awarded a $5.8 million NCI contract to conduct large-scale toxicity and efficacy testing of anti-cancer agents. This award -- the largest NCI grant ever awarded in Oklahoma -- supports testing potential chemopreventative drugs and biomarker modifications in preclinical models of colon, breast, lung, prostate, pancreas and skin cancer. With this award the OU Cancer Institute becomes just one of three centers in the nation doing such testing for the NCI.

New Laboratory Space Dedicated to Cancer Research is Opened

In August 2005, OU Cancer Institute members began to occupy the new Stanton L. Young Biomedical Research Center II (BRC II). Along with its adjacent sister building, BRC I, both facilities add a total of 233,000 gsf of space dedicated to cancer and genetics research. The BRC II floors will be used to house newly recruited OU Cancer Institute investigators. In addition, the BRC II facility houses cores that support cancer research such as Flow / Confocal, Proteomics, Microarray, and a Vivarium Barrier facility.
