OU Police Bike Patrol

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Police Department Bike Unit began in the Spring of 1998 as a form of community policing. After evaluating the benefits of how well the officers were able to interact with the public, the department moved forward in providing for a permanent Bike Patrol Unit. Since its inception, the unit has grown to a total of fourteen officers. We addressed three concerns in forming and implementing the program:

First was to be able to afford officers the ability to quickly, efficiently, patrol and respond to areas around campus which are inaccessible to patrol cars and impractical for foot patrol;

Second, was to provide a more approachable police officer to the community. Thus, allowing the officer to interact with the community and listen to the concerns of the public, and

Third was to make the police officer more visible to deter crime.

All officers in this unit are volunteers, who enjoy riding, interacting with the public, and maintaining their physical fitness. The patrol operates 24-hours a day, 7-days a week except during inclement weather.
