First Aid

In the event of a serious illness or injury on campus, immediately call the OU HSC POLICE DEPARTMENT, 271-4911. If you notice any medical alert jewelry, advise OU HSC Police Personnel when reporting. DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.

Persons responding to a medical emergency must protect themselves from exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials.

  1. For bleeding control with minimal bleeding, disposable gloves alone should be sufficient.
  2. For bleeding control with spurting blood, use disposable gloves, a gown, a mask and protective eyewear.

Frost Nip or Frost Bite

  1. Warm with lukewarm water until thawing is complete, but no longer. NEVER use hot water.
  2. Dry heat is not recommended.
  3. DO NOT rub the affected area.
  4. Seek medical attention, especially if blisters occur.

Thermal Burns

  1. Keep the injured person warm.
  2. Remove any jewelry from the affected area if possible, turn it in to the responding OU HSC Police Officer for property control.
  3. Apply cool, NOT COLD, clean water, or dressings to protect the affected area from dirt and friction.
  4. DO NOT break any blisters.
  5. DO NOT apply oil, butter, grease, or ointment to the affected area.
  6. Seek immediate medical attention.

Epileptic Seizure

  1. DO NOT force anything into the mouth.
  2. Protect the patient during the seizure. Move any obstacle that may come into contact with the person having the seizure.
  3. DO NOT restrain the patient.
  4. Reassure the patient after they become coherent.
  5. Seek medical attention, if necessary.

Electrical Injuries

  1. Turn off the power source, if possible.
  2. Ensure the scene is safe before taking any action. DO NOT touch the victim if live current is still in contact with him/her.
  3. Seek medical attention.

Animal Bite

  1. While wearing gloves to assist the victim, carefully massage the wound and apply gentle pressure to encourage bleeding.
  2. Rinse the wound under warm running water for 15 minutes and continue massaging the site.
  3. Wash the wound and surrounding area with povidine-iodine swabstick for 5 minutes; continue to rinse periodically.
  4. Pat the injury dry using sterile gauze pads.
  5. Cover the wound with a pad and secure it with gauze and tape.
  6. Seek medical attention.

Closed Fracture

  1. DO NOT move the victim unless there is danger of fire explosion, or other life-threatening danger.
  2. DO NOT try to set a fracture, or straighten an injured limb.
  3. Stabilize the injured area.
  4. Seek medical attention.

Dislocation

  1. Immobilize joint in the position found, and DO NOT attempt to straighten.
  2. Seek medical attention.

Small Foreign Object in the Eye

  1. Wash gently, or flush with water.
  2. Seek medical attention.
