First Aid
In the event of a serious illness or injury on campus, immediately call the OU HSC POLICE DEPARTMENT, 271-4911. If you notice any medical alert jewelry, advise OU HSC Police Personnel when reporting. DO NOT MOVE THE VICTIM UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
Persons responding to a medical emergency must protect themselves from exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials.
- For bleeding control with minimal bleeding, disposable gloves alone should be sufficient.
- For bleeding control with spurting blood, use disposable gloves, a gown, a mask and protective eyewear.
Frost Nip or Frost Bite
- Warm with lukewarm water until thawing is complete, but no longer. NEVER use hot water.
- Dry heat is not recommended.
- DO NOT rub the affected area.
- Seek medical attention, especially if blisters occur.
Thermal Burns
- Keep the injured person warm.
- Remove any jewelry from the affected area if possible, turn it in to the responding OU HSC Police Officer for property control.
- Apply cool, NOT COLD, clean water, or dressings to protect the affected area from dirt and friction.
- DO NOT break any blisters.
- DO NOT apply oil, butter, grease, or ointment to the affected area.
- Seek immediate medical attention.
Epileptic Seizure
- DO NOT force anything into the mouth.
- Protect the patient during the seizure. Move any obstacle that may come into contact with the person having the seizure.
- DO NOT restrain the patient.
- Reassure the patient after they become coherent.
- Seek medical attention, if necessary.
Electrical Injuries
- Turn off the power source, if possible.
- Ensure the scene is safe before taking any action. DO NOT touch the victim if live current is still in contact with him/her.
- Seek medical attention.
Animal Bite
- While wearing gloves to assist the victim, carefully massage the wound and apply gentle pressure to encourage bleeding.
- Rinse the wound under warm running water for 15 minutes and continue massaging the site.
- Wash the wound and surrounding area with povidine-iodine swabstick for 5 minutes; continue to rinse periodically.
- Pat the injury dry using sterile gauze pads.
- Cover the wound with a pad and secure it with gauze and tape.
- Seek medical attention.
Closed Fracture
- DO NOT move the victim unless there is danger of fire explosion, or other life-threatening danger.
- DO NOT try to set a fracture, or straighten an injured limb.
- Stabilize the injured area.
- Seek medical attention.
Dislocation
- Immobilize joint in the position found, and DO NOT attempt to straighten.
- Seek medical attention.
Small Foreign Object in the Eye
- Wash gently, or flush with water.
- Seek medical attention.
