Pediatric Surgery

The Pediatric Surgery Section has had an approved residency program since 1978 and is one of the oldest pediatric surgical training programs in the country. The two-year residency program begins in July of each year and is matched through the National Resident Matching Program. David W. Tuggle, M.D. is the Residency Program Director and Chief of the Section of Pediatric Surgery. His interests include trauma, critical care, and pediatric surgical oncology. P. Cameron Mantor, M.D. is the Medical Director for the Children's Hospital and his clinical interests include congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital thoracic issues in children and pediatric tumors. Nikola K. Puffinbarger, M.D. specializes in biliary tract diseases in children. Robert W. Letton Jr., M.D. clinical interests include pediatric trauma, metabolic response to injury and nutrition. The Pediatric Surgical Service does approximately 1800 operative procedures per year - 200 of which are in newborns. A full range of complex laparoscopic procedures is offered by this service including laparoscopic correction of diaphragmatic hernias, imperforate anus, Hirschsprung's disease, gastroesophageal reflux, and a variety of genitourinary abnormalities.
