Josh Barton & Friends’ Mont Ventoux Climb for

Pancreatic Cancer Research and Awareness

Joshua Barton, MD completed medical school at UT Houston and did his training as a resident in the Department of Surgery at OU Health Sciences Center including 2 years of Surgical Research.  He completed a fellowship in Hepato-Pancreato-Billiary GI Surgery at Mayo Clinic and is currently in private practice in Dallas.

On July 12th Josh and close friends (Neil’s Garage Team) will undertake a cycling adventure in the Provence Region of Southern France with the goal of climbing one of the most difficult mountains in the world, Mont Ventoux, not once, but 3 times to bring attention and focus to Pancreatic Cancer.  The purpose is to increase awareness and raise funds to support pancreatic cancer research through Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN), the national pancreatic cancer advocacy organization.

INAUGURAL CELEBRITY GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR PANCREATIC CANCER

The success of the Celebrity Golf Tournament for Pancreatic Cancer far exceeded all expectations and expectations were very high to begin with. This success was due to the extraordinary efforts of Jim Edwards and support from a dedicated team which included Mary Jane Edwards, Stephanie Mitchell, and Julie & Mike Linse. There were 36 teams consisting of approximately 150 players which included 40 celebrities. There were 48 hole sponsors, a number of donations, and many silent auction items. The event was well covered by Channel 9 and OETA as well as radio and multiple newspapers across the state. The proceeds from this fundraiser will provide a resource to underwrite Support Group activities which are focused on patients, survivors, and education. This event received high praise from all participants and the administration and staff of the Territory golf course. This was the largest event they had hosted to the extreme that they were required to bring in a substantial number of extra golf carts. Everyone requested to be notified regarding participation in the 2011 tournament. A number of lessons were learned this year that will make the 2011 event even more successful.

We want to recognize the support of the Heisman Trophy winners Steve Owens, Billy Sims, and Jason White and Joe Washington for their significant contributions to the success of our event. This event would have been substantially diminished at best and may not have occurred at all without their enthusiastic input, advice, and participation. They are incredibly gracious representatives of the University of Oklahoma.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND

The OU ~ Southwest Program for Pancreatic Cancer is based at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City and is dedicated to serving pancreatic cancer patients and their families and friends.  The initiation of this program is the collaborative effort of the Department of Surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and the Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Oklahoma.  There is extensive interaction with the leaders of the nationally prominent advocacy group, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) (http://www.pancan.org/index.html) that will be relied on for the development of the program.  The foundation for this regional program is derived from the national agenda set forth in the Report of the Pancreatic Cancer Progress Review Group as presented to the National Cancer Institute in February 2001.  This report is the result of a 10 month effort by approximately 120 nationally prominent participants representing the full spectrum of expertise required to identify a comprehensive array of priorities associated with pancreatic cancer.
