PROGRAM BACKGROUND
The OU ~
Southwest Program for Pancreatic Cancer is based at the University of
Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City and is dedicated to serving
pancreatic cancer patients and their families and friends. The
initiation of this program is the collaborative effort of the Department of
Surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health
Sciences Center and the Department of Communication in the College of Arts
and Sciences at the University
of Oklahoma.
There is extensive interaction with the leaders of the nationally prominent
advocacy group, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) (http://www.pancan.org/index.html)
that will be relied on for the development of the program. The foundation
for this regional program is derived from the national agenda set forth in
the Report of the Pancreatic Cancer Progress Review Group as presented to the
National Cancer Institute in February 2001. This report is the result
of a 10 month effort by approximately 120 nationally prominent participants
representing the full spectrum of expertise required to identify a
comprehensive array of priorities associated with pancreatic cancer.
