Section 3: Experience Using a Brief Cognitive Screen for Older Adults

OBJECTIVE: Practice administration and scoring of a brief cognitive screen

ACTIVITIES: (all links open in new windows)

b) In order to help you choose an appropriate brief cognitive screen for the next experiential exercise, please consider the following self-reflective questions:

  • Think about the type of clinical setting you are working in.

  • Is time an issue?

  • Is comprehensive evaluation more important?

  • What type of providers (MD, nurse, psychologist, social worker) will be administering the screen?

c) Conduct an experiential exercise:

  • Select one of the brief cognitive screens from Section 2 that you would like to get experience with.

  • Although this module is best implemented as a group activity with partners, it can be adapted and completed individually as well. If you can, find a partner who will help you “role play” as a health care provider administering and scoring the assessment, and again as the patient being screened with the assessment. Take turns so that each of you plays the role of provider doing the screening and patient being screened. If you are unable to find a partner for this experiential exercise, you may play both roles, yourself.

d) Please "link-out" by clicking on the link below where you will tell us which brief cognitive screen you chose to work with. The link-out survey ends with a brief evaluation of this program.
