Professional Practice Gap: 1. According to the latest evidence, some practitioners fail to properly diagnose insomnia disorder before prescribing sedative hypnotics. 2. Practitioners may not know the specific uses for each sedative hypnotic with regards to initiation and/or maintenance insomnia. 3. Practitioners may not know the specific components of cognitive behavioral therapy and how they compliment each other in the treatment of primary insomnia disorder.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, participants will improve their competence and performance by being able to:
1. Define primary insomnia disorder and be able to distinguish common differential diagnoses.
2. Summarize the current clinical practice guidelines for the management of primary insomnia disorder.
3. Recognize recent trends in sedative use, sleep medication prescriptions, and over the counter sleep aides.
4. Distinguish between the available FDA approved sleep aides by mechanism of action and recommended uses.
5. Summarize the components of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia treatment.
