Professional Practice Gap: The earliest years of life are crucial for healthy psychosocial development throughout the lifespan. It is well known that early intervention impacts future mental health outcomes throughout the lifespan. These effects include not only mental health outcomes but also community financial outcomes. There is also a lack of training in infant and early childhood mental health in psychiatry training programs across the nation. This lecture addresses these gaps by discussing the effects of depression on the infant and it is addressed to psychiatry trainees.
Learning Objectives:
1. To review the effects of prenatal and postpartum depression on infants and young children
2. To learn the effects of parental depression on attachment
3. To implement recommendations for the prevention and treatment of mental health disorders in parents.
