EVERYDAY SAFETY

EXT. CAMPUS COMMON GROUNDS. Time lapse shot of busy students at lunch.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
A campus is a very busy place. Students are studying - working part time jobs - socializing. Keeping yourself safe is a full circle, 360 degree, 24/7 activity. Staying Safe is largely about taking precautions.

STUDENT UNION STUDENT INTERVIEWS

MALE STUDENT
I always lock up my room whenever I'm not in it. And I have a special lock for my computer. In case that gets, so that doesn't get stolen.

MALE STUDENT
There's usually one person in the dorm at any given time. If there's no one there, the door's always locked. So basically the door's always locked. If I have anything out, I usually try to keep my eyes on it, like Ipod, graphic calculator, textbooks, etcetera, etcetera.

FEMALE STUDENT
And I usually bring my computer with me, because that's the most expensive thing I own. Or my phone or my Ipod.

MALE STUDENT
I don't bring a lot of money, I only bring the money that I think I'm gonna need, and never too much.

FEMALE STUDENT
My cell phone is always on me, in my pocket and everything else is back in the dorm.

FEMALE STUDENT
We lock our door, so nothing gets stolen out of our room.

MALE STUDENT
When I'm sleeping too, at night, I also lock it. I lock the door.

MALE STUDENT
Well, this is something my grandma talked to me alot, we have a paper shredder. So just make sure you, I got like a handy paper shredder, so I just use that all the time, any time I throw anything away.

FEMALE STUDENT
You take the shreds, and I throw them in different garbages around the house or the campus. Make sure part of it goes in one week, one another week, so.

MALE STUDENT
If you are taking stuff out, always keep an eye on it, or just have a friend have an eye on it, like don't just leave all your stuff alone at the lunch table.

FEMALE STUDENT
Now to protect my Ipods, I keep them on my body, or I will leave them locked in my room.

FEMALE STUDENT
Keeping my purse with me.

FEMALE STUDENT
In order to protect my backpack, I usually keep it on me, or in sight.

MALE STUDENT
I guess I try to use my personal computer, and you know, have anti virus and spyware protection on my computer, so I don't get hacked or anything like that. And I don't let people that I don't know use my computer.

MALE STUDENT
Yeah, when you're protecting your stuff, just lock it up, take it with you, that's just the gist of it.

ANGLE ON CHRISTIANA - STUDENT UNION

CHRISTIANA
The precautions you take will not only serve you well on campus, but are things you can do after college, when you're out on your own.

TIME LAPSE SHOT OF BUSY STUDENTS EATING LUNCH

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Just like Mom taught you -

INT. view from inside door at peephole - _BAD STUDENT peeking through peephole-

ADD CG 'DON'T OPEN DOOR FOR STRANGERS'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
- when you're alone, do not open your door for a stranger.

HALLWAY - Showering student locks door behind her. ADD CG 'Door locked whenever possible'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Sleep with your door locked. If you have a shared shower down the hall, lock your door behind you when you use the hallway bathroom.

HALLWAY - BAD STUDENT TAKES A POST-IT NOTE_ OFF THE DOOR.the note reads 'Come find me in the LIB' ADD CG 'caution when sharing location info'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Don't post notes on your door telling everyone where you are. You're letting your friends know how to find you - but letting a stranger have the same information.

GROUND FLOOR ELEVATOR - creeper riding
A creepy, older gentleman is on the elevator when the door opens. Another _female student, waiting for the elevator,_ decides not to get on.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
If someone riding in an elevator makes you feel uncomfortable - trust your instincts - and don't get on.

ADD CG 'trust instincts'

GROUND FLOOR SECURE DOOR - female student on phone ADD CG 'don't prop doors open'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
And never prop a door open for friends.

ON CAMERA
RODNIE WILLIAMS
...what I always tell people is you really need to trust your gut and your instinct and your intuition.

GROUND FLOOR SECURE DOOR - FEMALE ENTERS WITH A STRANGER BEHIND HER
co-ed is loaded down with books and something bullky_. A _male stranger_ walking behind her offers to hold open the door, and walks in behind her.

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Let's say for example you're walking into your dormitory and somebody follows you in, tailgates behind you and they don't have a card, to get into the building and then they start to tell you, well I was coming over here to see my friend and he lives up on the third floor and I forgot my cell phone and they keep going...

ON CAMERA RODNIE WILLIAMS (CONT'D)
...on and on and on and they are giving you way too many details about the situation, much more than you would need, that should give you an indication that maybe they have an ulterior motive of some sort.

INT. CAMPUS SECURITY OFFICE, OFFICER AT SECURITY DESK

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Call Campus Public Safety and give them a detailed description of the individual.

EXT. CAMPUS COMMON GROUNDS ANGLE ON CHRISTIANA seated on steps

CHRISTIANA
When you're away from your dorm, you're away from your comfort zone, which is good because you should be instinctively a bit more cautious.

EXT. series of parking lot shots

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
When you're walking to your car, have your keys ready. If you're digging in your back pack, your purse, or your pocket,

A _FEMALE STUDENT_ WALKS TOWARD A CAR IN THE LOT_.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
then you're not paying attention to your surroundings.

SHE SCANS THE GROUND AROUND HER CAR BEFORE UNLOCKING THE DOOR. ADD CG 'keys, eyes & ears ready'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Be aware of broken glass on the ground which could indicate that someone broke into your car.

SHE PEEKS INTO THE BACK SEAT BEFORE GETTING IN.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
And take a quick peek into your back seat before getting in your car.

INT. CAR DRIVING ANGLE ON THE GAS GAUGE ADD CG 'Gas Half full'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
Keep your gas tank at least half full...

ADD CG 'tires properly inflated'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
...and check your tire pressure regularly.

ANGLE ON CHRISTIANA seated on steps

CHRISTIANA
These simple actions will allow you to only stop for gas when you want to - you won't have to stop late at night, or unexpectedly when you're in a bad situation.

INT. CAR DRIVING ANGLE ON female student driving ADD CG 'doors locked, windows up part way'

CHRISTIANA
Keep your doors locked, and drive with your windows two-thirds of the way rolled up, so no one can reach in to open the door. When you're driving with a friend and you drop them off at their house, wait until they're safely inside before you leave. And when you park your car, always lock it with the windows rolled up.

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
If you're driving in your car and somebody is following you, the very first thing that you...

ON CAMERA RODNIE WILLIAMS
Should do is call 911. Take a look around and see street signs or landmarks, so that you can actually tell the police where you are, so that they can come and help you. The other thing is, is if you don't have a phone in your vehicle at the time, what you don't want to do is stop. You need to continue to drive, turn on your hazard lights, honk your horn and go to a well lite area that has lots of people around.

FEMALE STUDENT DRIVING MEETS _MALE MOTORIST BY SIDE OF ROAD. The student will pull over in front of the stranded car_ and have a brief conversation with the other driver.

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.) (CONT'D)
When you're driving _down the road_ and you see somebody that needs help, our natural tendency is to want to pullover and help that individual out, but lots of times this can be a problem, and can lead to a very compromising situation. If you do decide to pullover, when you pull in front of the vehicle, lower your window just enough so that you can talk to the individual.

Female student: ...need some help?

Male motorist: Yeah, I've been having some car trouble. Do you think I could have you could give
me a ride.

Female student: Can I call 911 for you?

EXT. FEMALE STUDENT DRIVES OFF

RODNIE WILLIAMS (V.O.)
Keep your vehicle running and make sure _again_ that there are no obstacles in your way, so that you can pull away quickly if you need to. Let the individual know that you'll call for help and then pull off and don't feel guilty. You never really know who the person is on, on the other side.

EXT. CAMPUS COMMON GROUNDSB-ROLL OF _[FEMALE] STUDENT WALKING THROUGH CAMPUS. 4-5 shots of a student walking past buildings on campus.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
When walking, you should be just as vigilant. Know where your escape routes would be. Keep your eyes and ears open when walking or jogging alone. This means no headphones, iPod or cell phones which not only distract you, but help make you an easy target. Be aware of your surroundings: this means people - as well as buildings or landscaping which could hide a predator.

CUTAWAY TO A GROUP WALKING

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Walk in a group or with at least one other person whenever possible.

ANGLE ON WALKING STUDENT CROSSING THE STREET TO AVOID A LOITERER

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Be prepared to cross the street to keep distance between you and suspicious people. And don't be afraid of hurting someone's feelings.

STUDENT UNION STUDENT INTERVIEWS

FEMALE STUDENT
When I walk around campus, especially late at night, I walk with a sense of urgency. It's kind of a funny thing that my girlfriends and I say to ourselves, but that really is what we're talking about. And so, walking with a sense of urgency is knowing where you're going, knowing how to get there, and walking fast with your head up, with your, you know your back straight, your head up and you just walk with a sense of urgency, like you have somewhere to go and no one is going to stop you from getting there.

ANGLE ON CHRISTIANA - EXTERIOR LOCATION

CHRISTIANA
Here's a few other prevention tips: Learn about the security services your campus offers.

ADD CG 'use campus security options'

CHRISTIANA (CONT'D)
If your campus offers one, program the escort and transportation services into your cell phone. Know where campus emergency call boxes are located. And know which paths are best-lit after dark. But what about when you're off campus?

INT. OFF CAMPUS BAR / RESTAURANT General b-roll wide of _students in an off campus bar.

GRAPHIC - THREE ARROWS OVER WIDE SHOT

CHRISTIANA (V.O.)
When you're off-campus and in any new location, find three exits so you have several options for leaving. Just like when you went swimming as a kid, don't jump into the off-campus pool with out buddying up.

ANGLE ON Three FRIENDS_ADD CG 'stay with a group'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Go with friends. It's always safer.

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
If you're in off-campus housing, serve yourself your own drink.

ANGLE ON BARTENDER MAKING A DRINK

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
In a bar, watch your drink being made and never leave your beverage unattended.

ANGLE ON TWO FRIENDS ADD CG 'watch your own drink'

CHRISTIANA (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Also - don't ask others to watch your drink for you. They could look away for a moment, and you both might be sorry.
